Patience Is Essential in Cat Photography

Unlike dogs, most cats do not perform on command. We do have a clicker trained cat in our family, I’ll link a blog post on this here, but it’s fair to say that most cats have a mind of their own and need to gently and sensitively persuaded to work with us.

For this reason, fine art cat photography relies on:

Sessions are adapted to each cat’s comfort level and are never forced. I’ve been known to spend the first 45 minutes of a session, just getting to know the cat, working on winning their trust….because without their trust, literally nothing positive can happen. Once I have won over a cat’s trust using the behavioural knowledge I’ve gleaned from years of study (University of Edinburgh), then I can make up for lost time and work very quickly. But this first part is key, we must use a deep understanding of cat psychology to work WITH them, gently bringing out the best in them.
